The National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse (NDIC) states the following about low blood sugar:

    "Causes of Hypoglycemia

In people taking certain blood-glucose lowering medications, blood glucose can fall too low for a number of reasons:
    1. meals or snacks that are too small, delayed, or skipped
    2. excessive doses of insulin or some diabetes medications, including sulfonylureas and meglitinides (Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, biguanides, and thiazolidinediones alone should not cause hypoglycemia but can when used with other diabetes medicines.)
    3. increased activity or exercise
    4. excessive drinking of alcohol"

The NDIC also states the following with regards to glucose:

"When we eat, the pancreas automatically produces the right amount of insulin to move glucose from blood into our cells. In people with diabetes, however, the pancreas either produces little or no insulin, or the cells do not respond appropriately to the insulin that is produced."

Diet, exercise, and medication are the treatment for diabetes.

Subject: Low blood glucose level (original question)

I understand that a person is diabetic when there is insufficient insulin in his/her body to process the glucose in the blood or when there is insulin resistence. For type 2, there are various types of drugs that boost insulin generation by the pancreas, lowering the production of glucose by his/her liver, reducing glucose absorption by the gut, and increasing the sensitivity of cells to insulin.

    My questions:

    1. How does a type 2 diabetic get to have a dangerous low glucose level?

    2. Does it mean a diabetic no longer has automatic glucose level control in his/her body like a normal person has?

as i have recently been diaganosed as diabetic 3 months now i find it quite alarming that i have not nor will ever see a dietician, as i have a lot of weight to loose about 5 stone i also have underactive thyroid, so i thought i would have been refered to a dietician to assist me into loosing weight and controlling my diabetics.

has anyone got any advise to a healthy menu plan.

    thanks Val

Subject: Taking Glipizide, is this diabetes?

I was recently diagnosed with a glucose of 272. A week later my count was down to 121. Now, I am running under the 120s. I am taking the lowest mg of Glipizide and watching what I eat...missing what I do not eat with a passion...and I now find in the mornings my glucose is down in the 70s, and I get low glucose (hypoglycemia) symptoms of shakiness and weak in the knees.

I am wondering if the elevated number at diagnosis time was because I had lived it up the day before...I went to the Doctors office to check for a UTI and the nurse said there was sugar in the urine.

I am totally confused...anyone else have similar problems?

Subject: Why is my blood sugar high in the morning? (response)

My readings are always higher in the morning also, and it is quite confusing also to my thinking, and how I eat to keep it low. I do not take meds, or insulin, and only regulate my diabetes with diet..Sometimes I get so tired of greens, that I cannot even look at another green for at least until the next meal, because I know how important they are in keeping me full, but also combating my diabetes.

I was only 5 at my last A1c test, I am so happy. It is really funny what makes us happy. I talk to everyone about diabetes, and it turns out that everyone I talk to either has it, or has a family member or friend with diabetes, what an epidemic, and yet our country still does not recogonize the immense dilemma that faces our children, and the great amount of adults it has taken over. Take care, and blessings to all.
