Q. Does caffeine have any effect on blood sugar either good or bad? Also, what are some healthy snacks that will NOT cause a spike in blood sugar?
A. Regarding your caffeine Q: some research does show that caffeine can cause a small, but noticeable rise in blood sugar after eating among those with
diabetes. Your best bet is to test blood sugar 1-2 hours after eating. If you notice a rise try eliminating the caffeine next time and see if there
is any difference in your blood sugar. *Interestingly, there is some research that shows that caffeine can reduce risk for type 2 diabetes
(so basically more research is needed in this area).
Regarding your snacks Q: protein and fats will have less effect on blood sugar compared to carbohydrate
(but keep in mind that your body's favorite source of energy is carbohydrate so you need to find a balance). Protein and fats do contain calories so
portion sizes should be noted.
I have answered 2 questions on snacking.
